That brings an interesting question - can you still find the old versions of Slackware, Redhat, Debian etc for these old machines? I'm sure something like Slackware 5.0 or something would probably run on it - may be a bit old but hey, it would work right?

Thanks GYRM for your response. I went through xf86config again, followed a book that told me how to do it, and the X screen came up, so that problem is solved. Now the problem is that the mouse doesn't work right. The mouse arrow jumps around the screen and wants to stay in the upper left corner. That's the next thing I will work on. I assume that's probably also a problem in xf86config. So thanks for your interest, and, if you have any comments about the most likely source of the mouse problem, I would appreciate it.

ftp://ftp.slackware-brasil.com.br you can get slack 3.3 here. I couldn't get on the us slackware mirror, but I think it might go farther back.

As darin3200 stated yes you can get old versions of slack just some times you have to look around a bit.
