Will Installing GUI (Gnome) and GDM login adversely affect Ubuntu 8.0.3.4 server?
 

To install the GUI (gnome) and gdm login environment to the existing Ubuntu Server (8.0.3.4)already installed, would doing this, cause conflicts to how the server is currently performing with virtualized shared drives, etc?

This command-line is killing me! Until I get more versed in the ability to operate from it, I have read up and have chosen to install the GUI and login for this server.

Is it possible? Will it affect routines currently running on the server, etc?

I have inherited a server in this office that has virtual drives running that hold the company's data. We cannot compel the former IT guy to assist with this.

Risks; thoughts; anything?

If you just want to admin the server easier, it would be better to install something like Webmin. It's certainly less riskier than installing a gui and login on a production server. Webmin ain't perfect, but it reduces the time you spend at the commandline.

I don't see why not to install a GUI. I'm not sure there'll be any major security issues, and IMHO that's offset by the fact that you are potentially a big risk to your system, and you may be less likely to make mistakes in the GUI. Simple things like being able to copy-paste commands into your terminal rather than manually typing. And even if you do end up using the GUI to run a bunch of terminal windows, you still gain.

The only drawback might be performance. I would say consider not installing GDM, and don't start the GUI by default. When you want it, you log in at the console (NOT as root!) and then type startx. Bear in mind 'Logout' in the GUI will drop you back to the text console, you'll need to type 'logout' to fully log out.
