Will HPLIP work with other model printers?

My current printer is a hp and and the black ink suddenly stopped working. With the lack of support from hp end I decided to buy another printer(non hp) to replace the one I have if I can't get it working myself. I just want to know will hplip work with other brands?

I plan on getting a canon:

Since its listed as supported on

Or can someone suggest another all in one printer(preferably Canon,Lexmark, or Samsung) that you use and has been working flawlessly with linux with price range not greater than 150$.

hplip supports hp printers - however, CUPS et al supports many brands.

Canon brands are usually iffy, particularly pixma, however, since it is listed as supported you should be fine. I see the PIXMA iP4500 2171B002 is listed as working perfectly using the canonip4300.ppd driver, though it is not listed in foomatic... This means you will be installing a driver.

There is a ppd reccomended and some people have made rpms, which you can apply through alien.
So - don't worry about hplip.
