wifi usb driver problem. Running ubuntu 9.10 on HP pavilion dv 6000 notebook.

I have an LM Technologies 54Mbps wifi usb adapter. This is because my wireless section on my motherboard does not work. The drivers on the installation disk do not automatically install for linux. Looking at the manual I have to build the device driver. On the page is computer programing formulie that looks like a foreign language. I do not know computer programing. At the bottom of the page it says:-

Install individual driver

If you only need driver of ZD1211 or ZD1211B you can issue:

make clean
make ZD1211REV_B=0(0 for ZD1211,1 for ZD1211b)
make ZD1211REV_B=0 install(o for ZD1211,1 for ZD1211B

to install the driver. Issue where?

Then it says:- Build the debugging tool
There are two debugging tools in this package,"apdbg" and "menudbg". Run"make debug" to complete them both. If you do not have ncurse library, you may get some error messages while compiling meudbg. you can ignore it and get apdbg only.

It goes on and on about network interface, configure wireless settings. I am truly lost with the programing fomulie. I am 68yrs young and can pick things up. But slower than when I was 30. Appreiciate what any one can do for me.:hattip: I have read many posts on this problem and many seem to know programing from different operating systems. Even they seem to have a problem setting up linux. So I am not in bad company :D

Hello. Please plug in the USB wireless adapter, open a terminal, and post the output of the following

Code:

lsusb
lsmod

Thank you for replying. How do i open a terminal?

Burgerking 02-11-2010 12:17 PM

Have found out how to open a terminal. Opened it and got
kingburger@kingburger-laptop:~$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID id6b:001 Linux foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 device 003: ID 0ace:1215 ZyDAS WAL-54L WiFi
Bus 001 Device 001: ID ld6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
kingburger@kingburger-laptop:~$ lsmod
Module Size used by

Then came a list of 30+ modules but not one mentioning wifi adapter
What have I done wrong. When I put the first formulie in I found that I could not press enter to put the next one under the first.

Please post the modules lsmod listed. Use code tags to make it easier to read.

Can you also post the output of
Code:

iwconfig

I have looked on the page code tags but am still at a loss. As I said I know nothing about programing.

Burgerking 02-11-2010 01:03 PM

have posted iwconfig. this is what I get:-

At the bottom the the Quick Reply box here, you will see a button for "Go Advanced". Click on that. You will then see above the text box a number of options, including one that looks like #. Highlight your output, and then click on the # to wrap [code] tags around your text.

When you post it will then looks like this
Code:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

Also, enter the above into a terminal. Does the first give any errors? If so, don't bother with the second, if not, does the second list available networks?

Burgerking 02-11-2010 06:09 PM

I have posted sudo ifconfig wlan0 up in the terminal and i am asked for a password.
I have posted sudo iwlist wlan0 scan in the terminal and i am asked for a password.

All of this should be done on the machine we are trying to troubleshoot.

Anytime you use sudo, you will be asked for your password. That's fine.

I have had to reinstall Linux 9.10. Sudo is now working. I imputed sudo iwlist wlan0 scan. This has given me Cell 01 as my neiboughr's ESSID and mine as Cell 02. Now then what is next?

Burgerking 02-12-2010 09:06 AM

I have had to re-install Linux 9.10. Now sudo is working. Have inputted "sudo iwlist wlan0 scan" Cell 01 is my neighbors ESSID and cell 02 is my ESSID. Now what is next please.

If the device is able to scan for and find networks, then it's working. Does networkmanager not see the networks?
