Wifi Unavailable on Tails
 

Hello all,

I'm booting Tails 2.3 from a 4 GB USB drive on a new HP Envy laptop. I would give you the USB brand, but its a USB from work that only has the company's name printed on it.

The internet works fine when I plug in an Ethernet cable, but Wifi is unavailable. I thought my built in Wifi adapter might be incompatible with Tails, so I bought an Edimax USB Wifi adapter.

Something strange happens using the Edimax. Most of the time it doesn't work and simply says Wifi unavailable, as it would without it. But every so often, I can see a list of available Wifi networks, it just won't allow me to click on any of them to connect, and it still says Wifi is unavailable, despite the list being visible.

In addition, when attempting to launch TOR, the browser reports that the "proxy server is refusing connections." I checked my proxy settings, and no proxy is selected.

I deselected Mac address spoofing, and enabled internet use using options at the start of Tails.

I apologize if I left any critical information to assisting me out, please do ask and I will answer. Any help at all is appreciated.

The documentation on their website offers information. You don't say what (if anything) you've done/tried, other than another wifi adapter:

Hi, sorry I should have given more details.

When I click on any Wifi option such as "select network," or "turn on Wifi," or "Wifi settings," I run into the same problem. I can click "turn on Wifi" as many times as I like and it consistently will not turn on. It moves to the on position for a brief fraction of a second then reverts back to the unavailable with no explanation.

As for the rfkill list command, I can execute that command and block or unblock everything EXCEPT my Wifi adapter. My Wifi adapter is soft blocked, and "rfkill unblock 0" does not remove the soft block. I suspect this soft block is the problem, but cannot remove it.

Yes I have the 7811 model. The driver seems to be for Ubuntu, but I'll try downloading it with Tails. Thank you!

-::-Tails is 'Debian based' so a .deb pkg should be able to be installed. You can install .deb pkg's on Ubuntu as well.-::-

No worries...the soft block thing catches sometimes, and I didn't know if you tried it. Ztcoracat gave you better advice than I did. :)

After hours of trouble shooting, I'm still unable to download the driver.

Following the link to Ask Ubuntu, I tried every strategy in that thread. I executed the commands listed below and made no progress.

sudo apt-get update -Worked. Received update.

sudo apt-get install git build-essential linux-headers-generic dkms -dkms: command not found

It couldn't find the dkms command. I executed sudo apt-get install dkms. It seemed to work, and installed a bunch of stuff. However, when I tried the dkms command again, it had no effect.

git clone https://github.com/pvaret/rtl8192cu-fixes.git -Could not resolve host.

I'm guessing I can't move forward without resolving the dkms issue.

I also discovered I don't have the rtl1892cu module. I downloaded the driver from http://www.edimax.com/edimax/downloa...n150/ew-7811un
and couldn't figure out how to install it. I extracted the files but no command I tried worked from there. I'm pretty confused.

cd/path/to/extracted/files -Didn't work.
bash install.sh -No effect.
sudo dkms add ./rtl8192cu-fixes -Not found.
sudo modprobe rtl8192cu -FATAL: Module not found.

I ran these commands 4 or 5 times to ensure they were being inputted correctly (excuse any minor errors in above commands, I wasn't being as meticulous)

There were other things I tried but I don't even remember everything I did.

With that said, does anyone have any thoughts on my next course of action?

Now that you extracted the Ew-7811Un_Linux_driver_vl.0.0.5 cd to the directory that it's in:

And as 'root' run the install.sh script to install the driver. Like so:

The script should take off and install it. It may come with and installer that will walk you through the install.

I'm having trouble with commands locating the extracted files. Let's say for example I have my extracted driver on my desktop. What cd code would I use to locate it? I've tried things like cd/path/to/extracted/files and the codes you gave me above but all return no such file or directory exists. ./install.sh also returns the same response.
