Wifi stop working after updating to Debian 8

Hello,

I have the problem since i upgrade to debian 8 lastweek
My Wifi stop working, nm can not detect my wifi (was working normally on wheezy).
I did try following (im running jessie on my IBM r50E laptop)
disable the pci wifi (BIOS setup)
remove driver
reinstall the driver/firmware ipw2200
reenable the hardware (BIOS)
doesn't change situation.
I also trying to use USB wifi dongle (RTL8188), but same situation, network manager applet doesnt detect any wifi connection

Thanks..

Does wireless work from a Debian 8 "live" DVD/USB?

ubin10 09-09-2015 10:29 AM

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks to pick up my question.
I dont have a live DVD/usb, i'll try to download and prepare it.
what to check if it is working with live DVD ?

JeremyBoden 09-09-2015 11:12 AM

It would prove that Debian 8 works (or not) with your wifi and also allow you to download anything you need to re-establish a wifi connection.

Please post the output of:
Code:

ip a s
dmesg|grep 'firmw\|wl'

^ What HoaS said. You are probably missing some non-free firmware. As described here:
https://wiki.debian.org/ipw2200

No, im quite sure i have the correct firmware since it was working normal until i upgraded to Jessie.
I tried to remove and reinstalled the firmware, doesnt change the situation

Regards

Just to rule things out; did you do this when you installed the firmware:
Code:

# apt-get update
# apt-get install firmware-ipw2x00 wireless-tools

Code:

# modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200

Head_on_a_Stick 09-14-2015 01:01 PM

https://wiki.debian.org/ipw2200#Inst...lished_Systems

EDIT: @HMW -- Snap! :D

You can check if your upgrade procedure from wheezy to jessie (if this is what you did) was correct by reading the official release notes:
https://www.debian.org/releases/stab...rading.en.html

I'm not sure about 'wireless-tools' option. i loaded the firmware from usb stick, it was the first time i installed wheezy (netinst), the debian installer simply asked for the firmware during installation processes.
But i'll try to reinstall it with the command, thanks

Modprobe doesnt work for me
Code:

suryo@R50e:~$ modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200
bash: modprobe: command not found
bash: modprobe: command not found
suryo@R50e:~$ sudo modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200
[sudo] password for suryo:
bash: modprobe: command not found
suryo@R50e:~$
