why won't the internet work?

I just installed Linux 9.0...and I am dual booting 9.0 and Win XP. The internet works for XP, but not for linux. Any ideas why?? thanks!

Here is the result of the ifconfig command:
eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:A1:2A:6B:B3
inet addr:192.168.0.2 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:2 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:9 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:676 (676.0 b) TX bytes:342 (342.0 b)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xd800
lo

and here is the resolv.conf file:
generated by /sbin/dhclient-script
search sc.rr.com
nameserver 192.168.0.1

thanks alot!

Hi mikell, you will probably want to give more info like the program you are using to connect to the internet. ifconfig will only show ppp0 if it is running I think. But yeh a bit more info is probably needed.

Kristijan 01-06-2004 02:01 AM

jimthing2001, more infomation is needed. Is the internet being shared through a gateway? Is you PC directly connecting to the internet? What kind of modem do you have? Is there UNIX support for it?

By the way, unless your running a DNS server, your nameserver in /etc/resolve.conf should be pointing to an external address.

This is mine:

root@zion:~# cat /etc/resolv.conf
search ihug.com.au
nameserver 203.109.250.50

More info :)

I'd be *mighty* surprised if the Internet stopped working.
And I'd be even more surprised to be reading about it on the Internet .....

What we have here is a failure to communicate.
That applies both to the 'net, and helpful folk there-in trying to help.
As suggested, more (relevant) information would be helpful in determining any issues.

lol, Syg00...well maybe you wouldnt be so suprised if you read what I wrote. First sentence of the thread...I dual boot linux and windows (meaning I have both on my computer) and the internet works for XP, NOT for linux. Hence one could infer that I am on WINDOWS right now typing away. And you know damn good and well what I meant by the internet not working...you arent a computer man, dont act like one.

Anyways, thanks to someone's suggestion (who managed to communicate very well) I tried typing in an actual IP address in the URL. and it worked!! So I guess something is wrong with the nameserver.

Anyone have any suggestion or requested information? I'm using roadrunner to connect...my computer is directly connected to the internet through a Surfboard S4100 which supports unix apparently. We are using a router also. I'll post any info anyone needs. cause I have no idea. Thanks!
