Why the newly generate bitlocker key is not in ms acccount even though I was on Linux?! I am deadlocked.

I had previously set up dual boot Linux-Windows OS two years and also had bitlocker on to encrypt windows C drive which I should not have needed to I think. All was fine that time since I had keys saved to Microsoft account (I had set bitlocker key to save to Microsoft the first time) that worked! But on Friday night I logged onto Linux (I don't even use Linux and should not have had it installed) and hovered over the locked icon of c drive on Linux and I entered the correct authentication password to open it but instead a re-encryption took place which unknowingly to me generated new key id for which I need the associated key. This new key information is not being automatically to my Microsoft account probably I was on Linux?! I cannot find the password. I tried the 'manage-bde' command on CMD prompt but it showed only that key id and no password because I am not in windows so I can not use the CMD within windows.

I am in desperation and anguish since all work files (the entirety of my graduate research) are in windows and not backed to the cloud! My career is in jeopardy it seems!

(I have contacted Microsoft Support even Azure and System Administrator to see if they can help identify the recovery key associated with the new key id and been talking to them for 2 days but none of them could help and the conclusion they came up with was since I was in Linux, the key was not saved to MS account or Azure or even any other school/work domain since Microsoft is not affiliated with Linux and Linux OS most likely was not registered. I do not even use Linux! They said it could be possible that Linux saved the key locally or if there is system logs to look into)

I'd really appreciate it if you could help!

sbaweja,

Do tread very carefully and don't make the current situation even worse.

Which Linux distro are you using?

Installing Dislocker in Linux (Ubuntu/Mint/Debian) may help:

Code:

sudo apt install dislocker

I was using Ubuntu.

Your advice would be vey helpful. But right now, in my desperation to fix the issue earlier before involving others, I reset UEFI settings in BIOS to default so the Linux boot entry is not there now even though Linux is and must still be there since it was not deleted. So how may I bring back the Linux boot entry in the menu (GNU Grub)?

You can either reinstall Grub from the UBuntu USB/DVD you used to install Ubuntu and install the software referred to in post 2 or boot the USB/DVD with the version of Ubuntu you used to install, install that software and use it per instructions. If you boot the USB/DVD and install, do not reboot after installing the dislocker softwar3.
