Both versions of xerces-c can be installed at the same time.
No conflicts. They have different file names.

Fedora 15 : The file 'libxerces-c-3.1.so' is non existent ?
The available package is 3.0.21 : libxerces-c-3.0.so

? Your post #10 says version 3.1.0.21. Where did you get that ?
And : If it's a manual install to /usr/local/ :
Sumo is hard coded to look in /usr/lib/ only, AFAIK.

i use "yum install xerces-c
and the answer is xerces-c i686 3.0.1-21.fc15

thanks for your help

Well, you could try with a link :

cd /usr/lib/
su
ln -s libxerces-c-3.0.so libxerces-c-3.1.so
