Why linux works slow
 

Hi,
I am new for this and linux also.
pls give a suggestion to me.

my question my linux system works slow.
it takes more time to open any files or application.

system confguration is
Intel celeron 1000MHz
256 MB
40 GB


So pls guide me.

Which linux distro are you using ?
Which GUI are you using ?
Which the information you supplied us we can not give a answer
Some distros runs faster than they other

Well this was my old system
Intel Pentium 3 500 MHz
192 MB RAM
40 GB hard disk

I had fedora 4 on this which ran smoothly ( certainly i cannot run fedora 11 )
tecnically your system is better than this so you should be able to run fedora 5 or less or similar to that , i wouldnt run others as they have compiz which will slow your system
Choose your distro wisely according to your sys confign

Also, in the case of a LiveCD, it will always run (much) slower than an OS that is installed to the hard disk. So if you run a LiveCD, and like the OS but find it slow, try installing it, and note the speed difference.

Even on a relatively fast/powerful machine, this holds true.

While the desktop effects do slow the system down they can be shut off. I do not remember for sure but I think they are off by default on a standard install.

Running a non supported version is a very bad idea. There are no updates of any kind for those version, leaving them wide open for attack.

Fedora Core 11 might work, I doubt it would be the best out-of-the-box though. Unless you truly know your way around, use an standalone wm instead of a full blown last-generation Gnome desktop (even without the 3d desktop), and disable some services that you will never use.

I'd rather try something smaller, like Vector, DSL or Puppy. I agree however that it's important to use a distro that's up to date.

Jumping up to 512 will make a HUGE difference in the way full blown distros run. With memory so cheap now it is a very real option (look into going to 1gb if the motherboard will support it). I have a 1 Ghz PIII that ran Fedora ok(eh) with 256 but I have it bumped up to 512 and use it as the media player in the living room. For light tasks(email, web, letters, watching movies, etc) it is fine.

The smaller distros will definitely be speedier but they will not have as many features. Which is a better trade off only you can decide.
