One reason that could be argued is that the *nix OS layout is a superior design in terms of safety. There are plenty of other things to be pointed out as well, such as it's used less, or the fact that different distros lay out their system differently, and therefore it's not as easy to hack or write viruses for. Another argument could be that most if not all of the programs most users use are open source, which some believe to be more secure than closed source proprietary software.

Most of this is debatable, at least to a Microsoft fan ;)

I suggest you take a look at this thread over in the security forum, and particularly chort's postings therein. Which OS is more secure is a very complicated question. Also, bear in mind that the security of any installation of any operating system is largely dependent on the competence of the administrator. Sure, some OSes have more security tools or different security models, but ultimately a lot comes down to the human being in charge of things.

I think what makes Linux a lot safer than Win-Stuff is, that more people who are using and intrested in this fine OS keep an eye on security ... at least more than Win-Users.

Thats not at least because not every Idiot can use a Linux... and being an Idiot helps to get into trouble with viruses and trojans and stuff.

Like the others said, it depends much on the admin/users of the System, as far as we talk about user-interactive-security (don't know if there is a better Term for this?)

But when it comes to Systems own security, Linux has a lot more System-oriented layout. It is made to run forever. Of course, it is not free of bugs which may be abused for hacking or such evil things. But it takes a very short time until a new bug is fixed. That's one big plus from open source.

So, compressed I wanted to say: Linuxer's are usually not such Idiots (on computers) as about 96% of the windows-users (no problem, they are just uninterested in it... ) and the System itself is just laid out better/securer plus gets fixed faster (if the admin cares).

Greetings, Sascha
