why linux automatic reboot?


My linux server reboot about twenty times one day.I have observed cron and messages logs,but no exception.Please give me a suggestion,how can i find the reason?

Maybe the CPU reaches a temperature above the threshold. Try to monitor the CPU temperature (e.g. by means of lm-sensors) and check if the threshold is set in /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/trip_points (if it exists).

It will be better if you provide more details, like any pattern in time regarding server restart (mean Random restart or periodic restart), say every 1hr...etc and tail of the log just after the restart (which should provide your setup details and version info as well).

The equipment is HP server and OS is redhat5.6 . The time interval of server reboot is about half an hour,sometimes exceed an hour.

If you have Red Hat, you are in theory paying for support; you should consider contacting them. That being said, if the server is spontaneously rebooting, it sounds like some sort of hardware problem. I know some HP servers have a hardware diagnostic tool that can be launched from the BIOS. If your server has such a thing, it might be worth a try.
