Question Why is there 2.4 and 2.6?

Hi,
Why is it that the kernal is split into 2.4 and 2.6 devlopment. Surley 2.6 would be used fully owing to it being the most up to date?

Sometimes, businesses don't want the latest cutting edge tech. They want stability, they want to know that the machine will run as it's supposed to. That's not possible with new software - there are bound to be bugs. And some integral proprietary software require specific OS versions to run.

...and support for older hardware is being dropped out of the 2.6 series.
2.4 kernels (as in the default slackware install) run on older machines without needing to recompile and build modules.

...That's also why DamnSmall Linux uses 2.4, for older hardware support and a smaller memory footprint.
