Why is the ~ different on a linux?

Why is the ~ (tilde symbol) on a different key on the keyboard when using debian? Is there a way to change it?

Use the right keymap table for your keyboard, ie, use the right country code.

You should set it for the console & the GUI - loadkeys us - setxkbmap us
