@ Pingu4

that's strange that the distros you listed won't install to your HD.

Here is a link to distrowatch's database search http://distrowatch.com/search.php

scroll down to Search by Distribution Criteria (Simple Search Form). From the dropdown select these values

OS Type = linux
Distribution category = Old Computers
Country of origin
Based on
Not based on
Desktop environment
Architecture = i686 or i586
Status = Active

And then hit submit. You will get a list and distro description.

If you still have trouble installing distros. And finding memory for your computer type is still difficult, then you'll need to find a way to get a new computer if you have the money or credit to do so.

I wish you luck.

edit @ Geek255- that works, but you'll get lots of tweaky distros that are harder to install like that.

I wouldnt call a 512MB RAM P4 515 an 'old' system aynway. What exactly is considered an a old computer would vary, but my guess is that those distros are mostly aimed more at P3s with 128MB-256MB of RAM.

Very lame.

There is other ways around that problem...the best one that I can think of it to find a forum with a hardware focus with lots of local members. You might be able to find someone with the knowledge/skills to help you out, either to find agood local store (they sometimes like to hide in odd places) or maybe even come around to your house and help you.

If yuo can install ubuntu, you can change to xubunt/lubuntu (without the ubuntu stuff) easy. Its not a best way to get a 'lighter' ubuntu, but it works. This site has some great guides for how to do that-

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/

The commands vary from release to release. For example, to change ubuntu 11.10 to xubutnu 11.10 this is the command-

Code:

The page has links for how to do that to 11.04, 10.10, and 10.04. Dont try the 11.10 commands with a different version!

@ cascade9

I agree, a P4 515 with 512MB RAM isn't too old, but since Pingu4 had trouble installing some distros I though it wouldn't hurt to try distros for older computers.

I believe slackware should do fine with those specs. Before anyone says slackware is not for newbies, I would say that is a bunch of hog wash. We were all newbies once and some of us dare to venture into those intermediate+ distros.

I started with slackware 8 and I was a linux newbie then. As long as you can read and follow steps you can install and configure any distro. It's a matter of willingness and hands on experience. Newbies will never know unless they try.
