why is it
When I first log into Suse 9.0 gnome that my memory usage is so low, but the longer I'm logged in it creeps up? Is this normal?

It probably is, unless there's some kind of RAM eater back there. Linux is designed to use all the memory it can, and for good reason. When you have free RAM in Windows, it just sits there and does nothing. Linux makes that free RAM do something, usually caching program data for quicker startup. That's probably what's happening on your system.
