Why i cannot log into College Linux?
 

Hey All!
Im new to Linux, and i just installed College Linux for the first time. Well i did install it right but im having problems with login...It doesnt like my username and password! eventhough im typing the correct username and password! Please any1 help me here. I will really appriciate it. Thanks....

Try being a little more specific. I have never installed college linux (personally i use slackware). What user name are you trying to login with? The administrator account on linux is called 'root' - case sensitive. If you were asked to set a root password during, that is the one you should use. If you were not asked then use a blank password and see if that works. Remember, everything in linux is case sensitive. Hope this helps. if not, pls reply with if you had to set a root password (don't post that :) and if you were asked to create a user account.

Well, i have already setup my root password and username when i first booted into it. But after all that when it took me to the KDE environment it asked me for the Login and Password. NOW, im putting my username as login and root password as password. Also i tried to have blank password and blank login but it didnt work! :(:(:(...........

Well, trying to log in with your normal user name but the root password won't work, of course. However, I suppose you already tried to log in as normal user with the right password for that user account.
Try to log in as root, change the normal user's password, and log out after that (no surfing the web while being logged in as root! :) )

If that doesn't work (because your distribution (or X11) won't let you log in as root to a GUI), try the following:
Type Ctrl-Alt-F1. After some seconds, you can log in to a virtual terminal. Log in as root, type
passwd username
Enter the password when you're asked to, and press Ctrl-Alt-F7 (this will bring you back to the GUI login prompt).

No :( it doesnt work! I dont know whats goin on....It asks me for the Login and Password! And i am typin my username which is "jassim raja" and password but it says Login Failed. I created the username when i first booted into it. And there i created the root password. But i dont understand why it doesnt like those two now???

I mis-understand. Can you login as root with the virtual terminal trick proposed by addy86?

i installed colege linux yeaterday.
set my root password and username
but when it took me to the Login and Password screen. It says "LOGIN FAILED" when i type username that i created as Login and my root password as Password.

Now, how kan i get rid of this problem. I am dead sure that i am typing the correct username and root password.

The username root is the same thing as administrator in windows. You use root's password when you want to login as root.

Have you tried logging in using username root and root's password?

When you created a user did the installer also ask you for a password?

Yes Sir! i've been trying to login with my root password and username all the time...... but still it doesnt like it it says login failed.:( im sick of it now!Please help me here if u can. I wil REALLY appriciate it,

we are trying to help you. honestly we are but we are just trying to grasp the problem. With the username "root" and root's password which you set on install, can you login to the system. Not your user that you created. The most important thing on a unix box is that you can loign as "root". once you have that, you are going places.
If you can't login as "root" then try this...

Boot up the system from the CD or floppy disk. Mount the /root partition. Edit the "/etc/shadow" file using "vi". Find the line starting with root and delete anything between the first and second colon (:). Reboot; the root password is now blank. Remember to set a new password when you log in!

What!!! i never tried login as "root" i only tried to login with my username. Well that cud be it! I wil try to log in as root next time with my root password. And r u dead sure Sir that it will work.

Again, u r suggesting to do this as follows;

Login:root
Password:******* (root password)

and it shud work.... b4 i was doin this as follows

Login:jassim raja (which is my username that i created)
Password:********(my root password)
