Check your shell startup scripts (~/.bashrc and ~/.bash_profile). Do you have oracle installed on your system? If so you should probably just set the ORACLE_HOME environment variable in this scripts so it is not required every time you log in.

Because you or root has set that environment variable
from one of the login-scripts?

I was having two entries.....as below....

PATH=$HOME/bin
PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11/:/usr/local/bin:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_05/bin; export PATH

Now i put like this.....

PATH=$HOME/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11/:/usr/local/bin:/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_05/bin; export PATH
