Why have not I any sound from my pc, running Banshee and Rhytmbox?

My pc has got silent some times ago, probably after updating, but I am not sure. I have checked the settings of the loudspeakers and they seems okay in my opinion.

After consulting a local ubuntuforum I have uninstalled the VLC packet and from the .config folder I have deleted everything called vlc. Subsequently I have installed the packet of vlc from Synaptic, but without any luck.

I run processor Intel Pentium (R) Dual CPU E2180@2.00GHzx2, OS-type 32 bit, Shockwave Flash 11.2r202.

What can I do?
