Why GUI is not coming?

Hi everyone,
I am new to linux. I am running ubuntu on my system. Whenever i boot the system, i get command prompt asking me to give login name and password. I want GUI for that. When I give username and password, it just stops at command prompt. Then I have to give "startx" command and then only ubuntu's proper GUI like desktop, menu, etc. comes . I have no idea what is startx, I googled for the same problem, there some users suggested of using this startx.
The cause of this problem is, I tried to install python latest version and I aborted that setup and restarted the system. After that restart only i have landed into this problem.
Any solutions to this problem? Whats wrong with the system?
How to recover ubuntu? or is there any restore point in ubuntu?
also, I whenever I try to shutdown computer, there is no option like shutdown, only restart, suspend option comes.

startx is a command to start the X server if it does not start or you are in run level other then 5. To change the run level in Ubuntu you can fire a command

Code:
telinit X
where X is the run level, in this case 2
My ubuntu says the run level is 2. So you should try it to 2 otherwise you can change it to 5 as well.

I have been using Ubuntu for some time and switched over from RH some time ago but I have never come across this situation. I think this should have worked.
Can you paste the output of

runlevel
