Why Gnome is always the default desktop?

Hello!
I would like to know that why Gnome is always the default desktop preselected in all the distributions. We have to select KDE separately. Why don't they use KDE as default why just Gnome?

acid_kewpie 06-02-2008 01:24 PM

well they don't, just the ones you use. plenty have KDE as a default. And the way you say it, KDE is the only logical choice and Ghome is little more than a virus... obviously not true in any way. I'm pretty sure suse / novell use KDE as a default amongst others.

armanox 06-02-2008 01:45 PM

Novell based distros use KDE (if memory serves), Slackware uses KDE; LFS, Debian and Gentoo use what ever you want them to use; Kubuntu defaults to KDE; Fedora and Red Hat ask you to choose GNOME or KDE. So, what distros are GNOME defaulting other then Ubuntu?

Hendronicus 06-02-2008 01:58 PM

Debian lets you choose desktops when you first download it, and later you can use anything you want.

Well Fedora selects Gnome by default..

ciden 06-03-2008 03:02 AM

GNOME was started because KDE depended on the then proprietary QT toolkit.
GNOME was made using the GTK toolkit developed for the legendary GIMP.

At the time it was first made, GNOME was free'er than KDE and many people took to it.
But the thing is QT was also made open-source and there is no difference today on this basis.

Since KDE is a lot more mature, it is recommended over GNOME.

So? you seem to think that fedora and ubuntu are every distribution, and also that this matters at all.

Like everything in linux, that's just one persons opinion.

Tinkster 06-03-2008 04:53 AM

Aye ... I dislike both.
Gnome more than KDE, though ... ;}

Comparing GNOME and KDE, I find KDE a bit more user friendly to users migrating from Windoze.

My personal favorite is fluxbox with NO desktop icons, though this would simply kill a newbie. As I fall more in love with the CL, I have started to hate my mouse. Being an emacs guy, the keybindings possible in fluxbox are an obvious draw.

I used KDE for a year and Gnome for a year and Gnome won out. Gnome just works.

Was that an attempt at a joke?

If no:
