Why doesn't the root user show when I boot up?
How comes when I boot up or change users the root user doesn't show? I realize it is not a good idea to run in root. But sometimes I need to be in root. What is the best way to log into root. I'm very much a :newbie: . Thank-you

well whenever you have to do something as root, just fire up a terminal and su - to root. i would say that would be the easiest and safest way..

Ok, but can I log into a graphical interface with root? By the way I'm using Mandrake 9.1. Graphical interfaces are a lot easier for me to use than the command line. I guess because I am not used to the Linux command line.

You should be able to use su for your Root user tasks - however
K Configuration KDE Control Centre System Login Manager Aministrator mode butoon - type root password Users tab Uncheck the cross next to Root user, in "hidden users" apply Log out Log in if you think you need it temporarily.. |
Hurrah, That did it!! Thanks a Lot!!!

Bad advise, though.
You REALLY shouldn't use the gooey as root, specially shouldn't be running DE's/WM's as root. If you need to use the odd graphical tool just fire it up from your normal user, using ssh -W root@localhost <tool> Cheers, Tink |
