Why doesn't the root user show when I boot up?

How comes when I boot up or change users the root user doesn't show? I realize it is not a good idea to run in root. But sometimes I need to be in root. What is the best way to log into root. I'm very much a :newbie: . Thank-you

well whenever you have to do something as root, just fire up a terminal and su - to root. i would say that would be the easiest and safest way..

Ok, but can I log into a graphical interface with root? By the way I'm using Mandrake 9.1. Graphical interfaces are a lot easier for me to use than the command line. I guess because I am not used to the Linux command line.

You should be able to use su for your Root user tasks - however

K
Configuration
KDE Control Centre
System
Login Manager
Aministrator mode butoon - type root password
Users tab
Uncheck the cross next to Root user, in "hidden users"
apply

Log out
Log in

if you think you need it temporarily..

Hurrah, That did it!! Thanks a Lot!!!

Bad advise, though.

You REALLY shouldn't use the gooey as root,
specially shouldn't be running DE's/WM's as
root. If you need to use the odd graphical tool
just fire it up from your normal user, using
ssh -W root@localhost <tool>

Cheers,
Tink
