Why does Xubuntu and ubuntu make it so difficult to download pics

I have a been a windows user since the DOS days. I got tired of windows quirks so I tried Ubuntu ver. 12 and had problems downloadiing and sending jpg files. I went back to windows. When Vista crashed on me I decided to give it another try. Xubuntu. I having more problems with pics.

I downloaded "Rapid Downloader" and it accually worked the first time but does not work now. It recognizes the camara but it does nothing. Also when I try to send jpg files that are there from the first download, people are not able to open them up.

I really Xubuntu otherwise. It's fast, clean and without issues other than with graphics and media. Does anyone know what I can change to fix this? Or recommend a sw that will work? Should I get rid of Xubuntu and try Ubuntu again?

Thanks

Hi dcollins2007, I can't understand your problem a jpg picture is just a file nothing more, you should not have any problem. Download or send a picture is the same process as download or send a file with extension .mp3, .gt4, .txt and so on.

dcollins2007 04-03-2014 07:47 PM

I don't know

what the problem is. I know jpg and other files are just standard. Everyone I send a picture to can not open it up. I look at properties and they all show jpg format. Do you know if there is another free software I can use for my pictures?

luisfpetrucci 04-03-2014 07:49 PM

What software are you using right now to send your pictures?

schneidz 04-03-2014 07:54 PM

how are you sending them (via ftp/email/usb/...) ?

for me i just drag-and-drop from my fone to thunderbird email client (or my webserver) and they copy correctly.

seems like something in the middle is mucking stuff up. are you using some sort of thrid party site like facebook/twitter/dropbox. maybe they are converting them into their format ?

dcollins2007 04-03-2014 07:58 PM

I'm using google for email and that is how I'm trying to send them. I posted a chair on craigslist and the photo posted fine. I just sent a file to another email account and I was able to see it, but I think it's because it's the same computer.

Ya. Just emailing is all i'm trying to do at this point. It's sucks because I'm loosing money with this not working.

luisfpetrucci 04-03-2014 08:03 PM

It's queer but Try send your picture with a picture manager like shotwell photo manager this software have an option to send by email.

dcollins2007 04-03-2014 08:09 PM

your English is fine. I have a two fold problem in that Rapid Downloader is not downloading anymore and the email issue.

What do you download you photos with?

haertig 04-03-2014 08:13 PM

Have you tried pulling the memory card out of your camera and plugging it into a card reader? If you computer does not have card reader slots built in, then use an external one plugged into a USB port.

In other words, you need to try just a plain "file copy from a memory card" rather than "download from your camera". See if jpg's copy correctly using this method. Then "send them to someone" (I assume you are meaning via email when you talk about this). Can they open and view those jpg's now? If they still cannot view these jpgs that came from your camera, try accessing a website and copying some random jpg to your computer. Can you view THIS jpg? Can you send this website jpg to somebody and can they view it?

What we are trying to do is isolate where the problem is occurring. I highly suspect it is in the camera downloading software you are using. Once we determine WHERE the problem is occurring, then we can offer some suggestions. My gut feeling is that the fact that you can't send usable jpgs to others is irrelevant. The problem is probably that you are getting corrupted jpgs from your camera and when you send those corrupted jpgs to others, well, they can't read them because they were corrupted from the very beginning.

So do some of these tests I mentioned above and report back with something like: (1) I download pictures from my camera via "Rapid Downloader" and they become corrupted, but if I download using a card reader and no special software, things work fine. Or, (2) I cannot view any jpg, not matter what the source of it, on my computer, they are all corrupted. I am trying to view them using XYZ app. Or, (3) When I take a known-good jpg from my computer and email it to somebody using ABC app, then they cannot view the jpg.

At this point, based on your description, we could have case 1, 2, or 3 (although I highly suspect it's case 1).

Do some of this testing and report back after you've narrowed things down. Personally, I've always just copied pictures I took with the camers by sticking the memory card in the card reader. But if you don't want to do that, you should be able to get "Rapid Downloader" or some other camera-specific downloading software to work. But we have to prove where the corruption is occurring before we can attack some area trying to correct it. Otherwise, we're just shooting in the dark. If the corruption does look to come during the "Rapid Downloader" step, then the first thing I'd try is to find some other software, not Rapid Downloader, and see if that other software works. If not then we might need to look at drivers or configuration options in Rapid Downloader. And we would need to know what specific brand/model of camera you are trying to download from. But that is premature at this point.

Generally I don't use software to send pictures I just use my email service directly to select the files I want attach, if you want a software try with that

dcollins2007 04-03-2014 08:25 PM

I appreciate all the input from you.

I've been using Rapid Downloader but it stoped working. I've heard others having the same problem. I tried using 2 different camaras and the same result. Maybe Downloader is corrupted somehow?

Do you think I might have better luck with Ubuntu instead of Xubuntu? Do you use Ubuntu? Which software are you using to download images?

Thanks

i'm not really understanding the question but dont most people download images from the web using a web browser ?

frankbell 04-03-2014 09:30 PM

schneidz, I think he's talking about downloading pictures from a camera. From the first post:

Quote:

It recognizes the camara but it does nothing.
I might help to know the make/model of the camera, though, if lots of folks are having trouble with "Rapid Downloader," it may indeed be the issue. I think that the series of tests suggested by haertig in post #9 will help significantly to narrow down the possible causes of the problem.

I could not find a website for "Rapid Downloader," though there many with similar names. Synaptic on Debian refers to a "rapid-photo downloader." This seems to be its homepage: http://www.damonlynch.net/rapid/ I would guess that that is the application in question.

schneidz 04-03-2014 09:35 PM

thanks, i clicked on this from lqspy and forgot i already commented. when i duckduckgo'd rapid downloader it seemed to suggest a program for downloading things from rapidshare/youtube/facebook...

maybe their camera/fone uses mtp which doesnt always play nice with drag-and-drop ?

dcollins2007 04-03-2014 09:40 PM

Thanks for all you help. I downloaded snapshot and see how that works. Thanks again.
