why does my modem get disconnected after it connects?

I am running linux suse 8.2. I have a u.s robotics 56k voice/fax modem. It picks it up fine and dials-up but soon as it connects it gets disconnected. I am using the Kinternet app.

Someone pleaseeee help me

I don't use modems in linux, but isn't there some kind of logfile wich says what's happening?

does the modem complete its handshake? if so it's probably kicking you back with a bad username//password. if it doesnt complete(or get to) the handshake make sure tcp/ip ppp dhcp and your modem drivers are all in there correctly.
