Why does KWord not see my printer?

I found an old CDROM called Suse Linux 7.2 LiveEval and decided to see if it worked. I booted it on an old Gateway and it DID work!! Except, KWord doesn't see my printer. When I get to root, and enter cat textfile > /dev/lp0, the printer prints properly, so I know the hardware works and Linux knows about it. As Linux is coming up, I noticed the line "Starting lpd" which I think means the printing spooler has started, is that right? But when kde version 2.12 starts up, and I start Kword, then select print, there are no printers in the selection list. So I am assuming that lpd or some part of LInux doesn't know about the printer on /dev/lp0, but I'm very new at Linux and don't know what to do to tell lpd about /dev/lp0 if in fact that is what I have to do. I'm sure the answer is simple, so I would appreciate it very much if somebody could tell me what I need to do. Thanks !!!!
