Why does dd not copy the whole optical media like it does hard drives?

I was making backups of some optical disks I have, and something I noticed is that dd doesn't copy the entire disk. For example, cds are roughly 768MB, but dd doesn't give me 768MB ISOs when it's done.

I don't think anything is necessarily wrong because when I did an md5sum on the device, I still get the same checksum value on the device as I do on the ISO file created by dd, but it was something that peaked my curiosity.

It does copy the whole media. Unlike, say, hard disk drives any space not used on CDs isn't blank it's just not there.
