LinuxQuestions.org - Why does changing .conf files have no effect with SuSE 9.1?

Hi,

I am having persistent problems with SuSE 9.1/KDE -- when I change .conf files for things, nothing happens. Or something happens, it gets stored somewhere mysterious, and then I can't change it again. Examples:

1) The /etc/samba/lmhosts file. I had previously set it up with the name and network address of my Windows machine. Worked fine. Changed routers, new router had new default address, so I changed Windows machine's IP address, and changed this in lmhosts. Samba keeps looking for the old address. Can't figure out where it is getting it from. Samba also pays no attention to the broadcast setting in smb.conf.

2) The /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file. For some reason when I upgraded to 9.1, my Xerox N17 printer decided to forget it had a manual feed tray and a maximum 1200x600 resolution. I decided that this was probably a ppd file problem and duly switched it out with one from linuxprinting.org. It tested well, but YaST kept returning errors when storing the new setting. So, I tried the CUPS web interface, and was kept out by the password requirement. Poking around, I found four different .conf files in /etc/cups, all of which say they are sample files. I have no clue which one (if any) is actually in use. The plain cupsd.conf file was set to only allow members of the sys group in. I added root to sys, but to no avail. Of course, maybe that file was not in use at all...

Anyhow, now my samba and my printing are screwed up, and I am being denied the learning experience of screwing them up more and then fixing them. Can anyone tell me what is going on, and/or how to discover which conf files are being used?
