Why do my dvd's and cd's not play on debian amd 64

I am brand new to Debian Linux. A friend of mine just built me a brand new EVGA nForce 730a desktop. He downloaded Debian Linux AMD64 for my operating system.

Totem will not play my Dvd's. "Could not read from resource" pops up. It will play burned dvd's however. I tried installing libdvdcss2 with archive manager and it responded by telling me "could not open, archive type not supported."
Sound Juicer plays my Cd's but it plays it with a bunch of static or as if there is some sort of interference and it's annoying to try to listen to it.
Open Movie Editor does not work right either. I get done making a movie and play it back and the sound is good but the picture is jumpy. It does double takes every second or so.
I know I'm asking a lot of questions for my first time. Sorry.
I have read nothing but good things about Debian and I refuse to give in and go to Microsoft. Please help.

You tried installing with archive manager? What is the file, is it .deb, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2 or what?

The others could be hardware issues, I don't know your friend, so I don't know his/her abilities on this, but it doesn't sound software based- not that temperamental/inconsistent. That, or your system isn't picking up hardware properly ;)

You will need to give a few details of what you have tried and what repos you are using.

I am not on Debian right now so I can't tell you exactly what I have but I will be on there later (I am seeding a torrent right now and don't want to drop it as there are few seeders).

Thanks for that. I have it over on that partition but couldn't remember it. Still seeding with little help. I want to go to Debian cause I need to update it.

I am spending most of my on Stoner Edition 1.0 (Jaunty based) and Ubuntu 9.10. They like to call it karmic kuala but (got from these forums) I like to call it Kinky Kitten (looks very nice so far - can't wait for alpha2 - may start to see some of what it will look like).

Debian really needs some attention.

Thanks again for posting that.

solved all my problems in one simple step

Sorry guys. I took the easy way out. I switched to Ubuntu 9.04 and all my problems that I posted have been solved. I'm gonna learn this operating system first and then maybe I'll try Debian.
