Why do I get 'Unacceptable Integer' message in TOP when I try to renice/kill?

Hello! Another question here.

I'm currently using Centos and I type the top command to monitor my system.

I logged in as a root user. I then typed r to bring up a command line.
I've tried to type the following to add a niceness of 5. I typed it like so

renice -n 5 -p 3436

I got the last number by choosing a random PID number. However I keep getting 'Unacceptable Integer' in response to my command attempts. Can anyone explain this to me if I left enough information or submitted a screenshot?

I saw odd result using the "-n" flag but didn't get the error you did. Is it possible PID 3436 was ephemeral and gone by the time you tried to change it?

Per the man page priority setting is the default so try it without specifying "-n" flag as:
renice 5 -p 3436

FYI: You can see the niceness for the specific process as well as other fields of interest.
Try running "ps -p 3436 -o pid,tid,class,rtprio,ni,pri,psr,pcpu,stat,wchan:14,comm" before and after you change it.
