Why cant remote access just be easy?

OK Dont laugh at me. I JUST got Ubuntu Linux. I previously just used Windows XP (grr I know) but it was SO much easier to remotely access computers! You just hit "remote access" and there you are! I dont know what I'm doing now! A friend that is Linux savvy (but doesnt live nearby) was telling me to "find someone that can forward port 22 from adsl to port 22 on the linux box" or something like that.
WHA?!?!
If there is ANYONE that can just explain this in laymans english and maybe tell me what to do it would be GREAT! I am a total newbie but am much willing to learn!!!
Thanks!:)

It sounds like you want to access your Linux machine from outside your LAN, correct? This can be done with secure shell (SSH for short), which as the name implies gives you access to a remote machine via a shell (command line). You can run graphical programs over SSH as well and this is known as tunnelling. On your Linux machine, you'll need to have an SSH server running so that you can connect to it. The default port for SSH is port 22. What your friend probably meant is to have your ADSL router forward any traffic to port 22 to port 22 on your Linux machine, so you can access it (read about port forwarding on Wikipedia. It probably explains stuff better than I can!). Routers generally have a web interface, which you can use to change the settings (including port forwarding).

If something is easy then it's probably just as easy for malicious users to gain access.

It is not that easy to gain remote access to a windows machine there still had to be configuration done, if there is a magic "remote access" button I have never found it.
Once you have read the above links and are configuring your box, I am sure the above links will have this in there but remember to not allow root logins, only allow protocol 2. Look into having sshd listen on a different port than 22 and also into keys rather than passwords.
