Why cant I run CD,s

Hi Absolute newbie here. I,ve download UBuntu 8.10 and have been experimenting navigating around (Have not set up dual boot). Ive worked out how to down load programs from Add/remove. I know about "Wine" and Virtual box. My preference is not to use any windows based products but alas I suspect I will need to use either one of the above eventually.

Anyway my problem is I don't seem to be able to run CD,s. In another life (Windows) I simple put in a cd and it would come to life. Video tutorials for example. I know the PC is reading the disc because its listed on the desk top. I,m thinking I need to enable something.

Cam anyone help?

If the cd id either audio or video then I suspect you do not have the proper required codecs needed to play either of the format. What format is the cd burnt? What is the content?

Have you tried using cd in windows? If yes, how do you view it? Some application ? Which? I just want to know if it is a video or audio?

Just give us info about what file extension the file used. Perhaps something like .DXR? Anyway, you can check it via explorer.

check your system whether it has compatible player and do the search about "autorun in linux" (i mean do the search in google)

I no longer have Windows (Long story). The CD,s are both Audio and Video. I do asked if I want to auto run but then get an error.

I think the extensions are Video is .slv while I think the sound is .swf

These files seem to be related to flash. You might need flash player for that.

You might want to check this. This info however applies to Win only.

Just a thought, but if it's a flash object:

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

You download the Ubuntu 8.04 deb and double click it to run the package manager.

After restarting firefox, seamonkey, or iceweasle you navigate to the CD folder, which is in /media, and open the flash object with the browser.

Alternatively you can install wine and try typing in a terminal "wine /path/to/cd/autorun/file"

Hmmm Thanks I,m bit reluctant to start down loading all sorts of programs from different areas just to get standard things running. There nothing special abour these vidoe tutorials cd,s you see them all the time attached to all sorts of magazines. By the way my wife could burn via the CD burner either useing a Linux burning software.

We are just curious as to how come that other OS can do better than our lovely Linux.

LOLol I want to move away from the O/S and beleive Linux maybe the answer. I do expect a huge learning curve but am getting a little concerned that I cant get anything I considered as standard to work.

linuxlover.chaitanya 04-16-2009 03:39 AM

No. Flash would not be standard even on windows and you need to install flash player no matter which os you use. And similarly you will need to install flash player on linux. And like you need codecs on windows to play audio and video files, you will need them on linux as well.
