Why cant I install mandrake 10? partition problem

1st off, Hi I'm new to linux and everything. I have the dvd of Mandrake 10.0 and I'm trying to install it, but won't let me when it cant create a partition. I need to use windows with mandrake, so I hear I can either choose which OS I want to use when I start my comp. I think the problem is I use a 80GB with NTFS, not fat32. I was told that I have to do something so that 20GB is fat32 and 57GB NTSF. how do I create a partition. I know I have to format everything, and before I do that I have to backup all my doc and stuff onto dvd-rs. I hear that linux can only read NTFS, just not write onto it, so can that mean I can put all my music on the NTFS side? will linux programs be able to read it? thanks for your help! I use windows XP and have Mandrake 10 (.o or .1)

If you can, it would be easiest to use a program such as Partition Magic to resize the partition. You don't need to format "everything" (but backups are allways a good idea). If you do some searching you will find that there are also other ways of doing it, such as by using filesystem/disk utilities from a live cd for example.
And yes, that means you can play all your music on the ntfs formatted partition.
Good luck!
