Why can't I scroll down in the terminal?

Super dumb question but I don't know how to phrase it or how to search for it. I'm in rxvt and every time I pull up a man page or such I can't scroll down to see the rest of the manpage. I can scroll up but it'll show me scrollback from whatever I did previously. I hate pressing the down arrow button and page down goes too fast and I can't read like that.

Please help. Thanks.

Try a different terminal - there are lots of them. My own favorite is Xfce terminal (plain, simple, totally effective, and scrolling is available).

Usually this is because the manpage is being displayed by the less/more utility and it doesn't respond to page keys (either not defined or not used). Paging in this case is done with the space key and paging backward done by the "b" key. It is up to the pager program being used.

You can read the man page on the man utility to see how to select different pages...

many terminal apps, man pages and such do not support mouse. if i'm not mistaken, even a terminal emulator that does support mouse will not change that. you will have to change your habits.
btw, in urxvt you can use Shift-PageUp/Shift-PageDown.

actually for me less can handle mouse wheel up/down events (ubuntu 14.04. Gnome). If that helps you can try to set PAGER=less and check if that works for you.

I am not sure if this applies to rxvt also, but for rxvt-unicode (aka urxvt) you have to install the vtwheel extension to get scroll-wheel support.
