Why can't I run VCD-s or MP3-s in my Redhat 9 ?

Hi friends,
I have got a new machine with Intel Desktop Board D865GBF and Redhat Linux 9 i386. After lot of troubles I have succeded to get the proper audio driver and detect the soundcard ! But currently the problem is I can't play anything (VCD-s, MP3-s, WAV-s, MID-s) ! I have not checked with audio CD-s as I don't have any. The only sound that I have heard in my machine till now are test sounds during soundcard detection and system sounds like opening or closing windows etc ! I am dying to listen some music. Please help !!!
Please suggest what should I do. Be as descriptive as possible please, as I am completely new to Linux and just started learning from the internet.

I strongly recommend that you try a modern distro. While MP3, etc will work on Redhat 9, many other things wont.

Redhat ceased support for it in 2004. The latest version in the Redhat line is Fedora Core 6. You will still need to add MP3 support, but it is much easier. It is also easier to install most programs.

If you want out-of-the-box support, try
Mandriva One,
Sabayonlinux, [My Pick]
PCLinuxOS,
Dreamlinux

Thanks !!!

Thanks everybody for your replies ! :)

The time lag between my first post (opening the thread) and the second post (closing the thread) was more than 2.5 years ! I have gone through many distros in between ... and currently happy with FC5. Had some problem with FC6, but that'll be discussed in some other thread.

Thanks again !

Suman Chakrabarty.
