Why a Linux box hangs?

Hi All,

This is a general question and not restricted to a particular distro.

Why a Linux box hangs? What all may be the possible reasons for that?

Thanks,

Unsupported hardware, hardware conflicts, broken hardware, bugs in software, users messing up, ... So many reasons. And it depends on when the system hangs, how badly, etc.

Hi,

I would add 'services' to the list.

It hangs because something is fubared ... but when it does,
how do you get it back without pressing reset?

Hi,

Can you guys provide me example for a scenario where a system hangs because of buggy software?

Thanks,

Yep, I was confronted with one just today. I installed synergy (a program that lets you share mouse and keyboard between two computers). When I tried to move files over NFS from the synergy server to a synergy client, the client hung and the server was kicked off the net. Conclusion: don't use synergy if you also use NFS.
