Welcome to Linux Questions.

Sounds like you have messed up file associations. In other words you have tagged html files to be opened with a music player. Or am I missing something here?

If you are concerned with trojans and or rootkits, I am assuming that since this is a production web server that you have rootkithunter or chkrootkit installed correct? That would alert you to anything that is out of whack.

I'd just like to pt out that RH9 is yrs old and not supported(!), so you can't get updates (esp security ones).
Pls update to a modern distro eg RH FC7 or Centos if you prefer RH.
