which verison to use?

Hi experts,
which version of redhat will you suggest for a newbie to start off with?
thanks

koyi 01-25-2004 10:16 AM

Well, either 9.0 or Fedora Core should do....
but as Fedora Core is a development version...
maybe it is better to start off with 9.0... of course this is just my thought...
There are forums for both Redhat and Fedora...
why dun you go check it out?

TheOneAndOnlySM 01-25-2004 10:33 AM

go ahead and try redhat 9.0 if redhat is the distro you want to play with

support for redhat still exists through april, so that is plenty of time to download security and errata

like already stated, fedora is still in development and still very buggy

sentme_mail 01-25-2004 10:36 AM

do you mean that redhat will not have free online support after April?

No, after april there will be no more support. I have no problems with using Fedora Core 1. You'll have longer support on it and the next version, if you decide to upgrade when it comes out, will probably upgrade easier from FC1 than from RH9.

sentme_mail 01-26-2004 04:57 AM

where to download FC1 ??

i RH going to be like M$ ??

UltimaGuy 01-26-2004 05:05 AM

No, RedHat is not going to become another MS. Check this thread that enlightened me : http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=111871

UltimaGuy 01-26-2004 05:06 AM

And check this page to download and install fedora : http://fedora.redhat.com/download/

pradeepmenon777 01-26-2004 07:17 AM

tell mewhether you have a lot of bugs in fedora?? i am not so confident to try on fedora as it has not be publicised much

UltimaGuy 01-26-2004 07:48 AM

Don't be afraid of bugs. It won't probably affect you, even if it is there!

But you can also try this out --> Mepis

lhiggins 01-26-2004 08:22 AM

If you want bugs. Use Mandrake 9.2 (Mandy is sucks now). I'm going back to fedora core. Didn't have one problem with it. Was very stable and I had 3 different update programs on their: apt, yum and up2date.

sentme_mail 01-26-2004 09:46 AM

so where can i get support if i want to use RedHat at home?

benjithegreat98 01-26-2004 09:49 AM

I had small problems when I first used FC1. Small things like getting the flash plugin to work, getting java to work, getting the NVIDIA drivers to take, but each problem I encountered had a solution documented on the net somewhere. I've been using it since the day it came out and I'm very happy with it. Can't wait to see what FC2 is like with the newer kernel. But that's in April, I believe.

i have had absolutely no problems getting fedora core to work, except that if i use the mouse while it is starting up the mouse will freeze, but once its started i can use the mouse as much as i want
