Which Ubuntu should I use "server" or "desktop"

I am new to Linux. I have arranged a CD of Ubantu which is a Desktop version of Ubantu 8.10.
I have 16 machines all woring on Windows XP. I use netwoking for Internet Connection Sharing and Print Sharing.

I want to use Ubantu on my server. So can you please let me know is I can use Ubantu 8.10 desktop version for my server or will I have to get the server version of Ubantu.

Thanks and Regards

Either will do. As the names imply, the desktop edition is oriented towards the desktop, the server edition towards servers. This means that the desktop edition does not install any servers while the server edition does not install anything that one would use on a desktop (graphical user interface, browser, office suite, ...). But there aren't any strict limits as you can easily install anything you need from the online repositories. If you install the desktop edition, you can install any type(s) of server you need. If you have the server edition and you would like a GUI, you only need to download one. Then again, if you really don't want a GUI, there is little point in installing one even though it is easily removed. Using the server edition to set up a desktop makes a bit more sense to the extent that it allows for tighter control over the exact GUI components that will be installed (the desktop edition sets up a default set of components without any opportunity to change them at install time). Of course, this is only useful if you have a bit of experience and you already know what you need.

Thanks Buddy. I will try to install the Ubantu server and get back to you when I need some more help.
Thanks again for your reply.
