Which program to use?
 

I would like to migrate to Linux but I don't know if it will be functional enough for me. I have a copy of Mandrake 10.1 ready to be installed.

I would like to migrate with as little adaptation as possible, here are the software I am currently using

Windows XP pro (that's the OS ;-)
I would be pleased to get rid of it ;-)

Nero (CD and DVD burning tool)
Any good CD/DVD copy software would do the job

DVDShrink (encode and compress movies so a DVD9 can fit on a DVD5)
One of the software I use the most. Since there is no Linux version of this software, does Wine run it as fast as in Windows?

DVD Decrypter (Rip protected DVDs)
When DVDShrink can't rip the DVD I use this tool, I also use it to create ISO of DVD5 which I burn directly with the same software

Shareaza (P2P software that use Gnutella 1 & 2 network)
Connection to gnutella 1 network is not that important since it is not that fast but the Gnutella 2 network is a must to me

eMule (P2P that use eDonkey network)
The edonkey portion of Shareaza is crap so I need to use that software. I don't use it that many often since Torrent is so popular

BitComet (BitTorrent client)
Replaced the crappy Azureus with that excellent client. I really use it a lot.

Photofiltre (picture modification software)
After trying Photoshop and GIMP which have too many functionality and are way too complicated to me, I used that easy and fast software.

OpenOffice.org (office software)
There is a port of that software on Linux

Firefox (web browser)
There is a port of that software on Linux

Foxmail (email client)
I find it to be the best mail client to me, but since I don't use it that much I think I could use any other good mail client.

If you have any suggestion of software to use please post. When the list will be completed I will install Linux :-D

Mandrake is an excellent distro to use. Many of the programs you would want to replace your windows will come stock, such as...

-The Gimp - a photoshop type program -- GREAT
-OpenOffice - comes stock
-Firefox - can get and install easily
-cdrecord or K3B - for burning. Work great, very easy. cdrecord is text based command line (easy as heck to use) and K3B aaplies a GUI to cdrecord
-Limewire - may replace your Shareaza program, may not. But, there is most certainly many programs you can use that will be comparable to Shareaza
- Same for eMule - dont know what replaces it, but positive something can.

I am not familiar with ANY of the dvd utilities, but I know some come stock and others will be EASY to get.

I say GO FOR IT!!!! You'll find the things you need much more quickly when you've got linux installed and can determine what is and isnlt included. Mandrake has a wonderful utility called urpmi that will search for, download, and install programs just by giving it a portiong of the program name For instance, once you're up and running, you could type something like

urpmi shareaza

and see if it finds a linux version. Also, if somebody here points you to a program you'd like to try, you just urpmi for it and 99 times out of 100 it'll find it, and any dependencies it may have (this is a huge benefit of urpmi) and install it without a hitch.

Do it, join the other side ;-)

For the DVD utilities all you need is dvd::rip (Sometimes called perl-dvd rip, or DVD Rip). It does everything, rip encode, burn, etc. In fact it is far better than anything that I ever used in Windows.
