There are already several threads regarding choosing a distribution. Check them out and you will find many helpful ideas.

Hello there and welcome to LQ =)

If you are planning your first encounter with linux, and want to learn about it gradually, I would suggest a well supported distribution such as Mint, Ubuntu or Fedora. That way you start with a full featured desktop and can slowly explore it, while getting the feeling for it.

On the other hand, if you want to start exploring right away and see what you end up with, you can start with Arch or Gentoo.

If you want a graphic interface from the start, but a lot of tweaking to follow, I would suggest Slackware.

Hi and welcome to LQ.

Alternatively, you could try some Live CDs/DVDs to get the feel of some distributions without installing them.

You could visit www.distrowatch.com, have a look at the list of most popular linux distributions and read some reviews to
get the idea what they are all about.

Enjoy.
