which modem for pc running linux?

my sister is about to buy a pc with linux installed but it has no modem.

like me my sister is a complete novice when it comes to a pc.

would i be correct in saying that she would need to buy an external serial modem, and if so is it a certain type of modem she has to look out for?

any help would be much appreciated

Most any external serial modem should work fine. Just make sure it is a hardware modem and she should be fine.
