Which linux is the best for small old system

I have a small old desktop (486) and like to install a Linux system as my bt download system. I installed redhat 9, it was soooo slow. Suse 8 seems a bit better, but still slow and had some other problems. Any suggestion?

Many thanks!

damn small or some older slackware ... just upgrade the
kernel and other security sensitive packages from source
afterwards.

I heard people talking about slackware also, and mentioned that slackware was very fast but difficult to understand. Is it true?

I'll try it anyway.

Thanks!

I find slack quite easy to understand. Its simplicity is
the most prominent feature (e.g. comparing the BSD
with the SysV inits ...). Slack has no wizards, after the
base install a text-editor is all you have/need to configure
the box :)

Cheers,
Tink
