Which linux?? and would it help??
 

Hi everybody,
Yesterday I decided to try and do something with an old Iqon pc I had doing nothing.
When I right click my computer and properties its says:

Celeron(R) CPU 2.93GHz
2.93GHz, 480MB of RAM

It currently has windows xp running on it but it takes ages to respond to anything I try to open. I decided to try puppy linux, which I booted the pc with using a disk. All went well but when I tried to watch a you tube clip or any other clip it became jerky and slow to respond.

Would it help if I totally got rid of winxp all together and installed a linux system on to my pc??

If so which linux system would you recommend?? I just want to be able to watch you tube clips and maybe access facebook.

For a system with that low amount of RAM I would recommend to use a lightweight distro, like Bodhi, Lubuntu, antiX, Salix with LXDE or XFCE.
Which graphics hardware do you have in that machine?

It will become slow to respond because is looking for the flash player plug in and all the other codecs that are not include by default in the live CD.

There are many distros that can run fine in a computer with that specs, however if you can add more RAM will be better.

For starters you can try Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuSE. Here are the links

They all are good you still going to need the Media Codecs to watch movies, Mp3s, and web streaming.
If you have the space in your Hard Drive you can dual boot with windows, if you dont need windows in that computer anymore you can install whichever Linux distro you choose in the whole Drive.

I would not expect good Flash performance with any Linux distro on such old hardware.

Try downloading the video to your hard drive and then watching it with your favorite movie player (mplayer, totem, vlc, minitube, etc) instead of with Flash plugin in your browser. Or upgrade your hardware (the best option).

The OP's computer does not fulfill the hardware requirements of one of these distros.

Pentium M (Pentium IV)

with 512 MB RAM
60 GB Hard Drive
It served me well to watch Felicia Day's The Guild and Doctor Horrible
