Which distro is right for my laptop

That's a different story. I appreciate you taking the time to read some sticky threads and references for LQ. Seeing the Site FAQ is a great resource as well. But in this case, what may be best is for you to offer some information about your laptop so people know if it is current hardware, or something old where the recommendations may vary a bit.

The other options are to download distributions and try them out either using a virtual machine or a live boot. The virtual machine is where you install free software, such as VirtualBox and then run the downloaded Linux ISO file within the existing operating system on your laptop (assuming it boots now). Or you can download a Linux ISO file, follow the instructions to make a USB stick, CD, or DVD media boot capable, and then boot off of those when they are inserted to your laptop. You will get the option to install that version of Linux, but you also can just try it out without performing the installation.

This gives you a preview of the various Linux distributions. People used to refer a lot to this site, https://distrowatch.com/, but honestly I would just see names of Linux distributions and then try one of them out. It depends I guess on how technical you are, for starters, as well as what the situation is. For instance I'd take a throwaway computer and just install Linux, if that failed, no biggie and I'd try something else.

Whats your Laptop configuration? Distro can be as small as Tinycode :-)
