which distro

OK Im a total newbie to the Linux world. Ive had 3 failed attempts at trying to install SuSe Personal, Pro, and Enterprise. My goal is to be able to install Oracle 9i on top of whichever distro I wind up using for learning purposes. Ive got an old school Duron 1.3 gig, 512 mb ram to do this on. Can someone please point me in the right direction. It doesnt even need to be recommended/ supported by Oracle so long as it works.

Suse should be a fine distribution (although I haven't personally used it). My experience is mainly with Fedora/Red Hat. You should probably focus on why you can't install Suse. What exactly is the problem? I suspect that if you have problems with Suse you will have problems with anything else.

Different message each time. Cant read from media, cant extract package, etc. Perhaps Im doing something wrong with the install? Is there a step by step for these thing out there?

Sounds like a hardware problem to me ...

Likely candidates are CD-ROM drive or the CD
itself, maybe IDE cabling problems or buggy
DMA or RAM ...

Ive got another box to test on. Is there a way to install SuSe Personal without it touching Windows?

If there's free disk-space, yes ... otherwise you'll
have to resize...

Tink

Yes it was a bad CD Rom. Thanks for the help.

Glad you're sorted, was it the media or the drive?

Cheers
Tink
