Which app do I need to open files from a camera

I have plugged in a Kodak camera into my computer and want to extract the mov and some jpegs and burn then to a disk not sure which application I need for this. also would like to wattch the mov files on a player, but VLc and mplayer don't recognize the mov file

without knowing specific desktop environment and default installed gui software, the only thing that is constant across all distributions is the command line which isnt very noobie-ish, sorry.

i am assuming you are able to mount the camera so that it shows up as a hard drive.
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
you mite need to define the filesystem and your ptp-camera mite not be sda
you can use cdrecord to burn the files.
mkisofs -r -o tmp.iso *.jpg *.mov; cdrecord dev=0,1,0 tmp.iso; rm tmp.iso
do cdrecord -scanbus if your cdwriter isnt the scsi device 1.

this isnt tested so man up on options.

i think youd need the essential codec-pack from mplayer to play quicktime movies.
