Where to start Linux programming

I've been using Linux for roughly 1/2 a year so I still consider myself a newbie. My question today is where do I start learning about programming on Linux. Before you answer here's my background. I am a Java developer with experience in many programming languages including VB6/COM+, RPG (II, III, IV, ILE), Javascript, ASP, and others. I know C and C++ but have never developed anything outside of simple console driven app with them. I'd like to get closer to the metal in Linux without getting overwhelmed. I guess what I'm looking for is a Linux Programming for VB coders type of introduction. Something that doesn't bore me with how to write hello world in C++ but at the same time doesn't overwhelm me with litte endian vs. big endian issues, POSIX macros and/or typedefs, and other technical jargon. I'd like to start by writing a simple native app that I could compile and run on Linux and learn the interacies of build/make'ing the executables gradually. Does anyone know what I'm driving at? Are there any decent web resources that I could use to get my feet wet?
