Where to place swap

At the moment I have two hd's (hda: 80Gb 7200rpm /hdb: 20Gb 5400 rpm) and linux installed on the second. I was wondering whether putting swap on the faster hd would increase performance (faster access time, different disk) or not make any difference (master/slave trouble).

If I put swap on the same dik as linux, does it matter where I locate it? Will it be faster if I put it next to / or /usr or doesn't the location influence performance noticably?

I'm not completely sure, but I'd just put it on the same disk as linux if for no other reason that organizational purposes. Also, some people say having swap as the first partition (hdb1 in your case) is quicker, but I haven't experimented with linux enough to know whether it's true or not.

Great thing abut Linux is that (with a few exceptions) it doesn't really matter in what partition you put things (even on remote computer!) as long as they are made available when necessary. The 'cleaner' you keep things the easier not to get lost, but what get's me lost might be peanuts for you.
