where to install eclipse/jvm/java
 

Hi

i just did a fresh install of FC2 on my laptop ... i sc***ed up things last time .. dont want to do them now ....

i want to install eclipse, JVM and j2sdk .... where should i install these so tht they are accesible by ne user of the system ....
also i wanna keep track of the changes made whenever i install nething so tht i can undo the installation if the need ever arises .... (the way u can remove a particular program usinf contol panel>add/remove progems) in Windows

The /usr/local hierarchy is intended for software not supplied by your distribution, like things you build locally from source. It is also where I prefer to install software that comes as pre-compiled packages as well.

I install java under /usr/local/java, with the j2sdk in one subdirectory and docs in another. I have also put eclipse there a couple of times since it's related and it works well.

If you want for instance Java to be easily accessible to everyone when installed, just add the "bin" subdirectory to your $PATH in /etc/profile or wherever you like to define things like these. I like to leave the system-wide /etc/profile clean and encourage users to add the path in their ~/.bashrc instead.
An example of how a statement adding the directory /usr/local/java/j2sdk-1.4.2_05/bin to the path (so you can just type "java" anywhere and it will execute): PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/java/j2sdk-1.4.2_05/bin

Problem running eclipse on FC2-linux
 

I unziped eclipse-SDK-3.0-linux-motif.zip in /usr/local/. This created /usr/local/eclipse/ directory with eclipse executable in it. I also run j2sdk-1.3.1_13-linux-586.bin in /usr/local. This installed java sdk in /usr/local/jdk1.3.1_13/ dirrectory.

In my ~/.bash_profile, I added these two lines:
PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/jdk1.3.1_13/bin
export PATH

I logged out and logged back in again, and checked $PATH to make sure the path is set correctly.

I run eclipse by entering this command from my home directory:
$/usr/local/eclipse/eclipse
The command came back with the error:
/usr/local/jdk1.3.1_13/bin/i386/native_threads/java: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

and eclipse displayed a window with the following messages:
JVM terminated. Exit code=127
/usr/local/jdk1.3.1_13/bin/java
-cp /usr/local/eclipse/startup.jar org.eclipse.core.launcher.Main
-os linux
-ws motif
-arch x86
-showsplash /usr/local/eclipse/eclipse -showsplash 600
-exitdata /usr/local/eclipse/eclipse -exitdata f8004
-vm /usr/local/jdk1.3.1_13/bin/java
-vmargs
-cp /usr/local/eclipse/startup.jar org.eclipse.cor.launcher.Main

I am new to linux and eclipse. Please help.
