where to install apps?

When installing Star Office 6 beta, I was surpised to see a question asking me where to install SO. It suggested inside /root. (I was logged in as root.). Where are apps normally installed? If I install in /root, is it accessible by the other users are the machine? It seems a bit messy to put it in /root, what is standard practice?

By default Star Office installs for a single user, and as such it makes sense to put it in that users home directory.

For a multi user install you need to use the net switch:

./filename.bin /net (or it might be -net, I'm not sure).

If you do this the install program still assumes you want a single user install when it gets to the point of where to put the files.

For stuff you install yourself (rather then using your distros packaging system) /usr/local is usual, but you might prefer /opt
